Ear Infection Blues

Last week we went in for Wyatt's 18 month check up. It was a very exciting appointment for a couple of reasons; we saw a new pediatrician, we get to wait a whole 6 months before the next appointment,he only needed one shot and the office was 10 minutes from our house. Lots to be excited about.

It went fairly well. I brought in his favorite little soccer ball to keep him happy while I filled out the endless amounts of new patient paperwork. They took us right into an exam room so there wasn't much time in the waiting room (clearly they have dealt with toddlers before, lol). The new doctor was lovely, she got along with Wyatt and seemed very relaxed with us. Down side she's having a baby of her own in October so we will have to put off his 2 year appointment for a few weeks while she is on leave. But things could be worse!

And they were. While she was checking his ears he got really upset and she asked if he had been pulling at them the last few days. I said no, he has been crabby and restless but I chalked that up to the GIGANTIC molars he has coming in. Man do those back teeth look huge in his tiny little mouth. The doctor then used the phrase "puss behind his eardrum". Disgusting.

So we have a first official ear infection. He's on antibiotics now and will be all set in about another week. He had been doing so well despite what has to be a very painful experience. I mean the last time I had an ear infection was in 2004ish and I still remember sitting in my bathroom crying because I was in so much pain. As I have mentioned before he is one tough little dude.

But we finally had the meltdown today. He slept late (weird), woke up in a horrible mood (also weird), refused to eat breakfast (super weird), threw a fit because I wouldn't turn on the TV (I'm assuming not the last time that will happen), and was down for a nap about 90 minutes later. Once he got up I tried a different approach. I sat him on the couch, gave him a cup of milk and a bag of pretzels, turned on Nick Jr and just let him sit.

He sat for over an hour.

DING DING DING!

Finally some relief from the screaming and a happy little boy.

That all pretty much sums up the day. It was back and forth between wanting to sit and space out in front of some cartoons and throwing fits about nothing. He even shrieked through his bath. Now baths are getting kind of hard again anyway, but this was the worst yet. He refused to even sit down in the water and I thought he was going to choke himself on his own saliva when I had to lay him back to rinse his hair. Once I had him out of the tub and wrapped in a towel, he laid his head on my shoulder and was doing that hiccupy breathing kids do after a big cry. I just held him for a while, loving the cuddle time but also feeling horrible that he had to have a screaming/choking fit for me to get it.

Thankfully I got a smile and a laugh out of him a while later when I put him to bed. He even blew me a kiss and waved before I turned out the lights.

Dear lord lets hope he starts feeling better soon.
