Laughter

Yesterday was a very interesting day. My dad and I had appointments with our councilor and then had planned to have dinner with my grandparents since we were in the general area of their house. It's fun to spend some time with them, have dinner, play some games, let them spend time with Wyatt...

But yesterday the plans got abruptly changed. As we were leaving the councilors office my grandmother called to let us know my grandfather had just gone to the hospital and she was on her way there.

A year and a half ago my grandfather had what was deemed a mini stroke, so small that the doctors had trouble finding it on the scans. He was a little slow for a while but recovered nicely. Well yesterday my grandmother got home to find my grandfather on the floor, not able to talk and icy cold. So she called 911 and then called my dad. Instead of spending the afternoon with my grandparents I spend the afternoon in a hospital waiting room.

Since my grandfather was in the ER initially, I wasn't allowed back with Wyatt. Probably good since I didn't want to spread germs to sick people and I didn't want Wy to pick up anything. Later they moved him to a regular room to monitor him for the night, but Wy and I stayed in the waiting room. The doctors were sure my grandfather had another stroke, but again were having a hard time locating it on the scans and wanted to watch him through the night. He was not doing so well at that point. My dad said he seemed to know who my grandmother was but didn't think he recognized my dad so probably wouldn't have known who I was at that point.

But something awesome came out of all those hours in the waiting room! Wyatt laughed! Like a real honest to goodness full on laugh!

Now Wy has been kind of chuckling and doing a weird little grunty laugh type thing for a while now. But I have been waiting on pins and needles to hear him really laugh. I love baby laughs. And he finally did it yesterday. I had taken him in to the bathroom to change his diaper and while I was cleaning him up I was talking to him and getting him to smile and play a little when all the sudden out of no where he started to laugh. I have no idea at what since I had stopped acting goofy to focus on getting his new diaper closed up at that point. It was the greatest sound I have ever heard. It was such a grown-up little boy sound from my baby!

He hasn't managed to do it again but I am even more excited for the next time!

Sara, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandfather but I'm so happy that Wyatt is doing his part as a child and trying to help take the pain away for you. It is a gift from him that you will treasure and the next time he does it (and there will be a next time) you will remember the first time he helped you.
